The G Scale Society was formed in 1987, for those interested in large-scale model railways and we aim to be the “Home of Garden Railways” aimed at those using 45mm gauge track regardless of what scale or scales they run on it.
Local area groups around Great Britain give you the opportunity of friendly and informative local meetings and garden visits. Our quarterly Journal is a glossy colour magazine with articles covering members’ railways, construction of stock, prototype detail plus Area Group News, Society News, hints & tips, members’ sales and trade adverts. There is also a Society Facebook Group for members to share their railways, and latest projects and ask questions of the wide membership.
Within the Society there is a wide range of modelling approaches, some run trains “out of the box” and build up large operating railways, whilst others will build trains virtually from scratch to a very high scale standard. But you’ll find ideas being shared between both extremes, in part because the majority of layouts are in the garden which means there are plenty of shared interests!

Your Committee
The Society is administered on behalf of its members by fellow members elected or nominated to the committee.
They are responsible for chairing our organisation, tending finances and the constitution as well as handling the operations of our society from the journal through to marketing and publicity.
Area Groups
The Society has over twenty-five Area Groups around Great Britain, membership of these is optional and you are not restricted to just one. They are great for meeting similar-minded people and for all the family to see Garden Railways in operation and absorb other people’s experience in how to (or not to!) build and run trains in the garden. Open Days give you the opportunity to visit other members’ gardens, view the setup and have a good natter over a cup of tea. Most groups are happy for you to visit without being a member, but please contact them and ask before going along.

Society Matters
The G Scale Society is governed by a constitution that outlines the organisation’s purpose, structure, and procedures. The constitution is reviewed and updated annually at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) where members are encouraged to share their opinions and suggestions.
The AGM is an important event for members of the Garden Railway Society as it allows members to come together, share their thoughts and opinions, and elect officers to lead the society. The AGM is open to all members and is typically held in the spring. During the AGM, the society’s financial report is presented, and the election of officers takes place. Members also have the opportunity to propose any changes to the constitution and vote on these proposals.
The society’s constitution is a vital document that ensures the society operates in a fair, transparent, and democratic manner. It defines the society’s objectives, sets out the responsibilities of the officers and committee members, and outlines the procedures for decision-making and the management of the society’s affairs. The AGM is an opportunity for members to take an active role in shaping the society’s direction and ensuring it remains aligned with their interests and needs.
For more information on the constitution, please contact Alan Eccles (details on The Committee page).
